So what's it like in Rwanda? Do I need to pack my cozzie? When's best for gorilla trekking? All valid questions which we're about to answer in our overview of Rwanda's seasons...
When: December to February
What to expect: Summertime in Rwanda with moderate temperatures, frequent cloud cover and generally dry conditions with occasional light rainfall.
Why visit: This short summer is a dry period running from mid-December and continuing throughout the whole of January and into February. It's a great time for gorilla trekking and while the climate in Rwanda is very similar year-round it's highly dependent on altitude and locality. There's often light cloud cover at this time of year and light rainfall with wonderful, moderate temperatures. The terrain is generally drier at this time of year, so it's a good time to hike and climb.
When: March to May
What to expect: Wet, wet, wet!
Why visit: This is Rwanda's long rainy season when rainfall can last multiple days, especially in the west of the country, peaking in April. While the rainforest gets year-long rain these months are when the most rain falls, making the forest floors wet and difficult to navigate. It's generally regarded as the best time to see chimpanzees in places like Nyungwe National Park and when the country’s landscape is at its most vibrant with trees and plants blooming.
When: June to September
What to expect: Cooler mornings and nights, warmer, sunnier days.
Why visit: The long dry season is the most popular time to visit Rwanda when you can experience the driest time of year. It’s also the best time for gorilla tracking when the rainforests have better hiking conditions and a better chance of animal sightings. Plan well in advance as this is also peak safari season.
When: October to November
What to expect: Cooler days and rainfall across the country.
Why visit: Don't let the short rains dampen your spirits! These months are a birder's paradise. Lush foliage means more birds are out and about, and specialist birding trips can be fantastic. The quick bursts of rain also create stunning photography opportunities. Imagine capturing vibrant landscapes under clear blue skies right after a downpour! Game viewing in Akagera is stunning at this time of year.
For Sian Bester and Cara Lloyd, Zafaris is the result of years spent working at the coalface of the safari industry, learning their trade and perfecting it.
Zafaris isn't a regular travel company thanks to the fact that Sian and Cara don't just know their safari onions, they can also prepare and dish those onions up in a delectable and irresistible manner! Both have worked in lodges and have experience in the "how" of the art of safari at a practical level. They've also done their time working in large, corporate operators, sweating over the minutiae of countless itineraries.
